Although phosphates (P04) are not chemical compounds that harm fish, there is one important reason to monitor the amount of P04 in the aquarium, and if necessary, use a remedy to reduce it. Why? Excess phosphates promote the growth of algae, which, in excess, will decrease the oxygen level in the water, contributing to cloudiness and greening of the water. Algae in the aquarium not only look unappealing but also harm the fauna and flora living in the tank.
